Voice of the Homeless Educational Program

Voice Of the of Homelessness (VOH) educational program attempts to inform the public about homelessness and prevention by bringing speakers to any interested group; Local Churches, School System, and other political entities have hosted such educational program in 2005/2006.

The Educational program includes, not only an overview of the rural homeless problem, but personal history from those who have been homelessness. Ending homelessness must start with education about the reality of homelessness, its social/political roots, understanding and listening to the people who are or have been homeless. They are our neighbors and members of our community.

Public perceptions and attitudes toward persons experiencing homelessness or in danger of becoming homeless need to change in order for positive, long-term solutions to be realized.

Most Americans rarely interact with people who are or who have been homeless. The lack of interaction between different groups of our society, combined with misinformation about of the homelessness problem contributes to a distancing of those who have housing from those who do not. As a result, homelessness is perceived as an abstract social problem.
There is also a fear factor that result in “We do not have a homeless problem in our community”
or “Not in my backyard” attitude.

Those who experience homelessness are often seen as the sources of their own misfortunes, and the socio-economic policies and practices that give rise to homelessness are then too easily ignored. This abstraction, in turn, reduces the degree of urgency and commitment needed to work strategically and consistently toward solutions to end homelessness that are long-term, outcome-based, and not just responses to crises.

The VOH educational program is a creative and dynamic tool that challenges tomorrow’s leaders as well as empowering those who have experienced homelessness first-hand.

By fostering an environment of self-worth, respect, and understanding for all people, VOH challenges all of us to believe that we can and should work on ending homelessness.

Housing subsidies are a key ingredient in ending family homelessness. Unfortunately, federal subsidies are scarce and difficult to obtain. Programs are responding by developing their own subsidy programs, including short-term, shallow, and declining subsidies.

Featured Speaker: Beth Stokes

This audio conference will feature Beth Stokes, executive director of Hamilton Family Services. She will discuss First Avenues: Housing Solutions for Families, a shallow subsidy program in San Francisco, CA. She will discuss resources and funding, the design elements of the program, and outcome measures.
